Tooth extraction in Sydney - Frequently Asked Questions

  • We understand that tooth removal can be painful but rest assured, at Enlighten Dental we use the best techniques and technologies to ensure your procedure is as comfortable as possible. We also offer options for anaesthesia or happy gas so you remain calm throughout the process. We also provide pain relief treatment and medications to help you with any post-extraction pain or discomfort.

  • Recovery from a tooth extracted depends on the complexity of the procedure, but generally what you can expect is some discomfort and swelling for up to 48 hours. However, as long as you follow our post-operative instructions carefully, any severe pain or swelling should subside soon after. We also recommend taking it easy for at least 24 hours after your tooth pulled.

  • It depends on the complexity of the surgical procedure. Generally speaking, tooth extractions are considered minor dental procedures and should not be too serious. However, complications can arise if proper post-operative care is not taken - from dry socket to infection so it is important that you follow all post-operative instructions provided by Enlighten Dental for your own safety.

  • At Enlighten Dental, we take extra precautions to minimize the risk of infection during and after your surgical extraction. Sophia Petta will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions which must be followed closely to reduce the risk of a deep infection.

  • At Enlighten Dental, we take a conservative approach to dental care. If the tooth can be saved through other treatments, we will do our best to preserve it. However, in some cases, tooth extraction may be necessary for your oral health and wellbeing.

The procedure generally starts with an X-Ray which will help us to determine the best course of action. We may then use special instruments such as an elevator or forceps to loosen and remove the affected tooth. Local anaesthesia or happy gas may be used to numb the area and reduce any discomfort associated with the procedure.

Once extracted, we will place gauze pad in your mouth to control bleeding and provide you with post-operative instructions.

Replacing any teeth that have been extracted is also important in order to maintain your natural bite and prevent other teeth from shifting. We will discuss the best options for tooth replacement during your consultation, such as dental implants or bridges.

  • There are a range of reasons why teeth may need to be removed, such as:

    • Severe tooth decay that cannot be repaired with a filling or root canal procedure.

    • Infection or abscesses in the tooth or surrounding area.

    • Impacted wisdom tooth which can cause pain and crowding in other teeth.

    • Orthodontic treatment to create room for other teeth.

    • Gum disease which leads to bone loss and loose teeth.

    • Risk of infection or tumours in the jawbone.

  • It’s important to take it easy for the first 24 hours and avoid any hard, crunchy or chewy foods. Soft foods and liquid foods such as yoghurt, smoothies, soup, mashed potatoes and applesauce are all good options that are gentle on your mouth after a tooth extraction. We also recommend avoiding alcohol or smoking for the first 24 hours.

  • Impacted wisdom teeth can cause a range of problems, such as pain and discomfort, crowding in other teeth and an increased risk of infection. They may also lead to cysts or tumours in the jawbone which can be dangerous if left untreated. For these reasons, impacted wisdom tooth may need to be removed by a dentist.
